Jul22005Re: Paul Leslie CLARKE
My grandmother, Eliza Clarke, was left a 1914-18 widow with 7children, when her husband was gassed in the war. She remarried a Lawrence. Granmdad Clarke is buried in the top left hand corner of Stoke Newington cemetary as you face the cemetary (where Grandadd Lawrence was head garderner and took care of the grave). I used to look through a hole in the metal sheet fencing as a child to see it. I have lost touch with all of the family through the war/divorce/death etc. Interesting to read thatAustin Clarke 1896-1974 was a noted Irish poet - as I also write and have published poetry. Does it run in the blood- as with the clerical stuff as sure I was a Benedictine monk in a former life.
Eliza's father was a seaman and married a Spanish/West Indian lady from Barbados (of whom my mother would not speak). Would love to trace the family - if possible. Can you help? jean brodie
