Clarendon Inn

Glad we made the effort to visit this place, after reading about it in More Tales from the Tap Room, it's a great pub. Bit of a walk from Folkestone, being just past the Sandgate Hotel, but worth the effort. It's quite a small Shepherd Neame pub, but cosy and friendly. Had four ales on (Best, Spitfire, Porter and something else) for me, and a good range of chocolate behind the bar that pleased Clare. Didn't investigate the menu properly, though it seems there was at least one vege option.

No pool table or music even, but they did have dominoes, which we played and played. Dominoes is the new darts, you'll all be into it soon.

Definitely going to visit again, and looking forward to trying it in the summer, when it's location and outside tables will really come into their own.

RE: Clarendon Inn

hello pauly, the clarendon is one of the best Folkestone/environs pubs. In my youth c. 1992-1994 the place to be for the indie type crowd in Folkestone however was The Sandgate Hotel down the hill. It was a proper scruffy dive bar/pub with a cracking jukebox and bands on. pics from NME etc all over the walls.

Yes we went to the Clarendon again this weekend, just briefly though. There were rumours of it shutting down, the brewery squeezing the landlord and the landlord unable to make enough money on it.

Also heard this week that the Sandgate Hotel is to close, or at least is up for sale. You been there recently? I've been in the upstairs bar but not the clubby type bar - it's not still good now is it?

RE: Cheers for chipping in

The last time I went it was a weird hotel bar/restaurant thing - this was years ago and I've never been back since. There used to be a gig venue/bar that everyone (I say everyone, I mean me and the crowd I hung out with) went most Saturdays called Bottoms, behind The Leas near where the underground car park is now. The other place we always went was a basement bar called Allsorts that used to stay open until all hours and be run in a speakeasy type fashion. That's gone now because it was under one of the houses that were opposite the Rotunda that got knocked down.

Bottoms pub bar booze hotel

Bottoms has reopened, I think it's a gay bar now though.

RE: Clarendon Inn

tried to have lunch there this (May) bank holiday.
Despite getting there 5 minutes before the official food last orders they refused to even give us a sandwich.

I know it was a busy time for them - but that is not what I call hospitality!
